Accuplacer Placement Exam - Math
Students must take the Accuplacer placement exam for math if they are seeking a college
degree or one-year certificate, as this placement exam determines a student's starting
point for the math progression required of their degree or certificate program(s).
Students who have received credit from TVCC for applicable TVCC math courses after
transferring in math courses from other colleges or universities, or via qualifying
Advanced Placement (AP), College Level Examination Program (CLEP), or International
Baccalaureate (IB) scores, will not be required to take the placement exam for math.
The placement exam measures math skills. This computer-adapted assessment program
was developed specifically for community college students and is used nationwide.
Scores will determine placement in math classes.
The placement exam is free the first time students take it, and there is a $10 fee
each time a student retakes a placement exam (this applies to the Accuplacer placement
exam for writing as well). Students are encouraged to take the placement exam as soon
as possible (once they've completed their admissions application and have been assigned
a TVCC student ID number). For more information on placement testing, contact the
Testing Center or visit https://www.tvcc.cc/testingcenter.
Writing Self-Placement and Accuplacer Options
Similar to math, TVCC students must take either the self-guided writing placement exam, or the Accuplacer placement exam in writing, in order to determine the starting point for the writing progression required of their degree or certificate program(s). Students who have received credit from TVCC for applicable TVCC writing courses after transferring in writing courses from other colleges or universities, or via qualifying Advanced Placement (AP), College Level Examination Program (CLEP), or International Baccalaureate (IB) scores, will not be required to take the self-guided placement exam or the Accuplacer exam for writing.
The self-guided writing placement exam walks students through a battery of questions pertaining to the student's academic background and skills, and based on the student's responses, provides the student with the recommended starting writing course.** Contact the TVCC Testing Center at the contact info listed at the top of this page for more info on the writing self-placement exam.
The Accuplacer placement exam for writing measures language-usage skills. This computer-adapted assessment program was developed specifically for community college students and is used nationwide. Scores will determine placement in writing classes.
*Please note that, if a student has already taken the Accuplacer Writing Exam, they will not be eligible to then take the self-guided writing assessment to select the writing class in which they will start. They must begin in the course determined by their Accuplacer score in that particular circumstance.
